ThE STYLE GUIDE
Now that we have your date locked in it is time to start planning what to wear. The information below will help you get the most out of your session.
For the Ladies
It is always a good idea to choose your outfit first and then style the rest of the family from there.
Once you have chosen your dress you will want to carefully consider your underwear choice. Well fitting underwear in nude or neutral colours that complement your skin tone is always a safe choice.
Access to my client wardrobe is available to all clients at no extra cost. If you choose not to borrow from my wardrobe another option is dress rental.

It is so important that you feel comfortable in what you are wearing. At the end of the day your outfits should reflect your family and personality.
This is just a guide and the photos are for you.
For the men
Think chinos, jeans, shorts, t-shirts, knits or even a t-shirt with a shirt layered over the top. Be mindful of the fit, as often in family photos there will be a lot of movement so you want to feel and look comfortable.
Fabrics with texture, such as linen, waffle and knits photograph well.
It is best to aim for elevated casual, not too formal.
FOR THE KIDS
Comfort is so important for the little ones. If the kids are comfortable they will be more likely to engage and enjoy the session. Make sure to try on any clothing well before the day. They grow so fast so best not to leave it to chance and give yourself time to source a new outfit in the case of an unexpected growth spurt.
Layers are also great for the cooler months. Think knits and beanies.
I do have some items in the client wardrobe for kids available to borrow. Please feel free to look at the range on the client wardrobe tab.
If you are looking to buy highly recommend the beautiful shop https://rosalynandrae.com.au they are located in Mt Barker and have a beautiful range of clothing for children under 8 years of age. They have kindly given me a discount code for my clients. Use the code ‘Rhiannon’ in store or online you will receive 15% off your purchase.
Things to avoid
FORMAL SHIRTS
Comfort is key if you want natural looking photos. Formal shirts are often restrictive when it comes to movement so if you are wanting to wear a shirt opt for a relaxed fit in a linen fabric instead of a stiff cotton.
CHECK SHIRTS
Keep it to one check shirt per group. Ideally in earthy tones and a soft fabric like flannel or similar.
THE WRONG UNDERWEAR
Consider underwear choices for the whole family. The same principal applies to children’s underwear be mindful of patterns showing through any delicate or light fabrics. This also applies with nappies, some have dark prints that may show through delicate clothing. Try and opt for a plain white nappy if this is an issue.
Mums strapless bras or stick on bras can be handy with some dress choices.
WHITE SNEAKERS AND SOCKS
Sandals in summer, bare feet on the beach or wherever possible. When looking for closed shoes earthy coloured boots or similar coloured sneakers work best. Stark white sneakers can stand out against clothing and be a bit of a distraction. Movement and comfort come first, so its best to avoid heels.
COLOUR COMBINATIONS
When choosing clothing try to avoid using too many of the same tones. For interest you want to keep them complementary but not matching. Avoid any clothing with large brand names or images as it will detract the focus off the subject- which is you!
FAQS
WHERE DO I CHANGE INTO THE CLIENT WARDROBE?
It is a good idea to come dressed in loose clothing that will be easy to remove whilst in the car. This makes a quick outfit change a little easier.
Otherwise we can always improvise with a strategically held blanket if changing in a confined space isn’t going to work for you.
WHEN DO I RETURN THE CLIENT WARDROBE?
The beauty of the wardrobe is less hassle for you. I will bring your selected items with me. After the session simply change back into your own clothes and hand them back to me and I will take care of the rest.
DO I NEED TO WEAR A DRESS?
Absolutely not! If dresses are just not your thing that is perfectly okay.
If you are on the fence I think it is a beautiful opportunity to wear something that makes you feel special and with the client wardrobe as a convenient option it is one less thing you need to worry about.
